Read the Olympia School District’s Pandemic Illness Plan
A note from the School Nurse:
As mentioned in the district letter from our Superintendent, we will continue to communicate with the federal, state and local agencies regarding the H1N1 Swine flu virus. In order to prevent the spread of this virus, please keep in mind these helpful tips that were emphasized:
Communicate to your student(s) the importance of covering their nose and mouth when they cough or sneeze, and to wash their hands often with soap and water.
- Keep your child at home if he/she shows flu-like symptoms (a fever of 100 degrees or higher and a cough or sore throat) until they are symptom free (without medication) for 24 hours. Students who have a fever of 100 degrees or more will be sent home immediately. The same rules will apply to Olympia School District employees.
- In addition to these, be aware that the virus may shed prior to the onset of a fever. Often times a person may have mild flu-like symptoms without fever in the first 24 hours of contracting the virus. This is called the prodromal phase.
If your child is at home sick, please provide information about his/her symptoms when you call the school to report the absence. This will help us provide accurate information to the Thurston County Department of Public Health.
Make contingency plans for the care of your child in case they become ill or in the event schools need to be closed for an extended period due to a pandemic flu outbreak.- If you or your child has a compromised immune system or other condition that would classify your family as a “high risk,” you should consult a physician.
