WASL
School Year 2008-09
Pre-registration for WASL Testing is open December 9, 2008 - January 13, 2009
All freshmen who want to take sections of the WASL must pre-register for the exam between December 9, 2008 and January 13, 2009. Students will need to call Olympia High School at 596-7000 or either stop by the front desk or come in the Counseling Center to get their SSID # (a district identification number) which will be used to pre-register for the WASL.
Go to www.k12.wa.us/waslregistration or call 1-866-400-WASL (9275) to register for the 2009 WASL exams (Reading, Writing or Math - Science is not an option).
With regards to freshmen taking the WASL, it is recommended to take the math portion of the exam if you are in Geometry or higher level math. Students who are really strong in Algebra 1 may want to consider taking the exam as well.
Freshmen with strong English skills may also want to take the Reading and/or Writing portions of the WASL. If you are unsure about the readiness of your English skills, consult your current English teacher for a recommendation.
Freshmen will not be allowed to take the Science portion of the WASL as it is not yet a graduation requirement. Students will take the science WASL during their sophomore year.
2009 Testing Schedule
| Mandatory High School Testing begins each day at 8am and ends at 10am. |
|
High School WASL Testing Week 1 |
There are no make-ups for the high school WASL test. If a student misses one
or more days of testing they will have to wait until the August 2009 or Spring
2010 test windows to take the test they missed. To receive a valid score a student must take
both portions of each subject’s test. For example, if a student takes
Reading Day 1 but is absent for Day 2 they will not receive a score.
August 2008 Make-ups
- Results will be returned in December
Washington Assessment of Student Learning
This information is from the Superintendent of Public Instruction Website:
"The 10th-grade Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL)
requires students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in reading,
writing, mathematics, and science by responding to multiple-choice,
short-answer questions, and problem-solving tasks.
Most students will earn the Certificate of Academic Achievement
graduation requirement by meeting reading, writing and math standards
on the 10th-grade WASL. Students have multiple opportunities to take
the test starting in ninth grade and throughout high school.
Classroom teachers and curriculum specialists from across Washington
assisted with the development of the questions for the state-level
tests. Two content committees were created at each grade level – one
for reading/writing/ communication and one for mathematics. These
committees defined the test and item (question) specifications
consistent with the state learning standards, reviewed all questions
prior to pilot testing and provided final review and approval of all
questions after pilot testing. A separate "fairness" committee,
composed of individuals reflective of Washington's diversity, also
reviews all questions to identify questions that might be offensive or
put some students at a disadvantage for reasons unrelated to the skill
or concept being assessed.
If a student does not meet one or more of the standards on the high
school WASL, four retake opportunities will be available during the
following summers and in the spring of the student’s junior and senior
year.
Provided below are links to more specific information about the WASL."
