EXAMPLES OF SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS AND PRODUCTS
Since we are just beginning this process, these examples are taken from other school districts that already have the culminating project requirement in place. All of these projects were successfully completed.
- Create an art portfolio for art school, including an in-depth study of your favorite style: surrealism.
- Translate a famous work from another language into English for publication.
- Rebuild a garage as part of a field experience.
- Design and lead your own school-wide workshop on the dangers of drinking and driving.
- Design and patent your own shoe.
- Work at a local museum as an intern and create a fundraiser for the museum.
- Create an on-stage stand-up comedy routine for a hearing impaired audience.
- Tutor elementary children in reading and study their progress.
- Study with a community theatre group and produce your own play.
- Create and implement a health and fitness plan as preparation for a marathon and run it.
- Calibrate a prototype for analytic chemistry equipment.
- Develop a robotics project and participate in a national competition.
- Coach a youth soccer team and complete a study in youth and motivation.
- Create a book and website of original poetry to publish on-line.
- Research why people commit hate crimes and create a resource guide for the community.
- Develop a mock or real investment portfolio and investment plan by researching finance management.
- Create a computer encryption program.
- Create an original music composition for an ensemble and have it performed.
- Create a hands-on study of the art of documentary filmmaking through the preparation, filming, and editing of a study of experiences of veterans of the Vietnam Conflict.
- Investigate contemporary photographic styles and techniques and create a portfolio of original works in the “post-modern” tradition.
- Intern in a veterinary clinic and create a resource guide for cat owners on feline diseases.
- Study gourmet cooking through research and field experience, learning about the design, preparation, and serving of traditional French cuisine.
- Build your own car stereo system by studying the science of sound systems, their design and installation.
- Volunteer to work in a retirement home and create an oral history collection of the lives of those who live there.
- Research, develop, shoot, edit, and exhibit a video documenting the Islamic experience in Washington State, focusing on the nature and causes of anti-Muslim discrimination.
- Study chaos theory through computer simulations and an internship or partnership with a university physics program.
- Read the major works of Jane Austen and write a research paper on her influence on English literature.
- Design an experiment and enter a science fair competition.
- Design a landscape and irrigation plan for a local church or community group.
- Organize a seminar on eating disorders.
- Produce a CD of original music.
- Design and implement a physical therapy program for a cerebral palsy patient.
- Develop an emergency management plan.
- Design a new computer game.
- Study the Palestinian Arab-Israeli conflict and write a research paper on barriers to peace.
Hopefully this list will illustrate the wide variety of project topics students may choose. Students are encouraged to use their imagination and design a project that will be personally meaningful.
Note:
Students already involved in groups (Eagle Scouts, etc) requiring a major project may be able to adapt their project to meet the CP requirements as well. Students should discuss this possibility with their faculty advisor during the proposal stage to make certain all OHS requirements would also be met.
