The journal is your documentation of all activities that went into your culminating project. You must document a minimum of 30 hours over the course of the semester you are working on your project. For evaluative purposes, if you did not document your activity in the journal, it did not happen.

Format:

  1. Can be word-processed or hand written (as long as it is legible).

Requirements:

  1. Each entry must include the date, time of activity, number of hours spent on that activity, and total number of hours to date, and if applicable, materials used and costs.
  2. Each entry should be a minimum of one paragraph which should cover what you did, what you learned, how it relates to your project (i.e. budget costs, project activities, skill building, research, problems, outcomes, goals, etc)
  3. Your reflection on whether the activity was helpful, what your next step should be as a result of this activity, and anything else that you feel is relevant. This reflection may be included in the same paragraph as the information in #2, or it may be separate.

Activity: Research options for trail design and materials

I researched options for trail designs and materials by doing research on-line, at the library, and contacting a forester who has extensive knowledge about trail building. There was a lot of information to sort through on-line and at the library to find relevant and useful information. I learned much more by talking to Mr. Jones, a forester who has extensive knowledge about trail construction. However, doing some research up front and being knowledgeable about various options prior to contacting Mr. Jones allowed me to ask questions and more easily understand the pros and cons of various options. If I had talked to him first, I probably would have had to contact him again once I’d done the other research. I learned that sequencing and preparation are very important to maximize the use of my time and be successful in my project. Having selected a trail design, I will now be able to estimate materials and look for donations. I will apply what I learned about sequencing and preparation to the remainder of my project.

Materials and costs: NA

Total time spent on project to date: 7 hours
