OHS Takes Second and Third in the Stock Market Game

 

The stock market game is a statewide competition conducted by the Washington Council on Economic Education headquartered at Western Washington University. Students make trades though internet brokerage accounts, and can buy on the margin and sell short. Over the last 25 years OHS has numerous teams that have won the stock market game.

Recent Results of the Stock Market Game

John Canfield, Matt Laurie, Kent Wu, Adam Buchholz and Chester Richmond won the spring 2008 stock market game. During the ten weeks of the game they made a profit of $23,160.55, finishing with equity in their online brokerage account of $123,160.55. Each member of the team received a $500 scholarship from Merrill Lynch, the largest brokerage company in the United States. There were 255 high school teams that participated in the spring game. The success of this team in the spring stock market game, along with Anna Swanson victory in the fall game gave Olympia High School a sweep of the games during the 2007-2008 school year.

During the fall game of 2007 there were 71 teams that participated. The Olympia High School team composed solely of Anna Swanson won the game. She finished with $126,341.00 of equity. Anna profit beat the Standard and Poors 500 Index by 29.08%. She receive a t-shirt and a small cash award. The Olympia High School team of Jordan Goodall and Cory Seay finished second with equity of $115,782.59. They received a small cash award.

Anyone OHS students interested in playing the stock market game, should see Mr. LeTourneau in room 114. You need not be enrolled in an economics class to participate in the game. Although there has been a ten dollar team fee to participate in the game in the past, the fees for the spring 2008 game were paid by Merrill Lynch. It is anticipated that Merrill Lynch will again be paying the team fees and providing scholarship to winning teams during the 2008-2009 scholar year. If you are interesed in playing the game, Mr. Letourneau is available every morning in room 114 from 6:00 AM until 7:45 AM. Please see him in September, if you wish to play the fall game or in February for the spring game. There can be as many as five people on a team or as few as one. Those wishing to play the game will be encouraged to attend an in presentation on stocks, mutual funds and the game. The stock market game is an excellent way to learn about personal finance.
