Geometry Syllabus

Course Description
Geometry is designed to provide the student those skills necessary for the successful transition into Algebra 2 and, eventually, Precalculus. Topics include the language of geometry (vocab.), reasoning and proofs, parallel lines, congruent triangles and their applications, quadrilaterals, similarity, geometric shapes, area and volume, coordinate geometry, and transformations. Topics from Algebra 1 will be reviewed and utilized throughout the course.

Daily Class Essentials
Each student is required to bring his/her textbook, paper (regular and graph), pencil, scientific calculator with trigonometric functions, straight edge, compass, protractor, and a math section of his/her binder (for notes and examples) to each class session.

Attendance
Each student is ultimately responsible for his/her learning. Attending class is an integral part of the learning process. Poor attendance for whatever reason will eventually have a detrimental effect on performance. School policy is followed as outlined in the Student Handbook under Attendance. Each student should be ready to learn when the bell rings.

General Classroom Idiosyncrasies
1. No food or drink of any kind permitted in the classroom.
2. No activated personal electronic devices in the classroom.
3. Use the lavatory outside of class time.
4. Freds (tests) are property of Mr. Rutledge and must be returned after review
and/or prior to any retake opportunity. Failure to do so may result in loss of
future refred opportunities.

Homework
Students will be assigned approximately one-half hour of homework on average each day. Some time will be given during regular class time to begin that evening's homework. Students should maintain a daily homework regimen. Since homework results are a major determinant in the student's final grade, completion and care in performance are essential. Tests are given approximately every half chapter so review and skills maintenance are crucial. To receive credit on assignments all work should be shown in pencil. Homework will be due on teacher specified days. Homework turned in beyond this time will receive minimal daily credit unless the lateness is excused by the office, e.g., illness, etc. Daily work, once entered in the computer, will be returned to students or be available on the counter.

Grading
Grading will be based cumulatively on test results (80%) and daily work (20%). Daily work is graded on a 3-2-1 basis with 3 resulting from a result of over 70% of the possible, 2 resulting from 50-70%, and a 1 for under 50% or late work. Not turning in an assignment will earn a zero. This is high school and all work will be shown.

Addendum to OHS Cheating Policy
- Though working together on homework and other class work is encouraged as a
means to better understanding, copying of another's homework or assignments
shall be considered cheating by both involved parties.
- Talking during an evaluation period shall be considered cheating.
- Any behavior which, in the opinion of the teacher, causes a student to have an
unfair advantage shall be considered cheating.
- Removing a test from the testing place without permission shall be considered
cheating.

Retake Policy
Students will be allowed six(6) test retakes per semester. Unused retakes may not be carried over to the next semester. Time permitting, any test except the semester final or take-home assessments may be retaken once for grade improvement. (Students absent on the original test day will be allowed to make-up the test but will not be allowed a retake. Their make-up test will be their only score.) The retake will be an equivalent test to the original. The retake will be done the following week on two teacher-specified days following the original hand back day. Failure to attend either of those retake opportunities for any reason will result in the forfeiture of the retake possibility for that particular test. Morning retake opportunities will end at five minutes prior to the beginning of regular classes. Scores will be determined from work completed by this time. No extra time will be allowed so a sufficient early arrival starting time is imperative.
Note - Students must be focused in their studies and efforts. Those students not properly utilizing class time may forfeit their retest opportunity for the next test.

Individual Student Schedule Idiosyncrasies
As more and more students are taking advantage of Running Start opportunities and Late Arrival/Early Dismissal options some clarifications must be addressed.
1. Running Start students’ attendance procedures are identical to other students.
Students arriving after the bell rings for the beginning of class are tardy
or worse.
2. Retakes are an option only during times specified in the syllabus. No special
arrangements will be made due to your choice of schedule or other
choices.
3. I am available before school (after 7 am) and after school (until 3:15 pm). I am
not available to help students during my 1st period planning time.

Advancement
Students must maintain a passing grade to stay in the class second semester. A minimum of a C range grade at the end of 2nd semester is required for advancement to the next mathematics sequence level - Algebra 2. Those students hoping to enter Honors Algebra 2 next year must maintain A level grades
