Course Info:

The goal of this course is to prepare you to go on to more advanced mathematics course. Since Algebra II as become a gateway course for all the public universities in the state of Washington, it is really important that you are successful in this course. Please do not view this as a traditional elective course, even though it technically is an elective. (You only need 2 years of math to graduate) To help ensure your success in this class, I strongly recommend that you have a grade of “C -” or better in your Algebra I and Geometry classes. If you did not get above a “C -” it may be in your best interest to retake Algebra I or Geometry this year. You can take Algebra II next year.

Grading:

Your grade will be computed by taking a weighted average of the points you have accumulated throughout the semester.  I am expecting roughly 1000 point possible this semester.  Points will be awarded in the following categories:

Daily Work (20%) . . . . . . . . . 5 pts/assignment
Quiz (30 %). . . . . . . . . . . . . .  50 pts/quiz*
Test (40 %). . . . . . . . . . . . approx. 100pts/test*
Final Exam (10%)  . . . . . . . . 100 pts

Daily work is due the day after it is assigned unless otherwise indicated. I do not accept late work for any credit. If you are absent, you have a number of days equal to the number missed to make up the work.

Quizzes come in two forms in this course. First, you will note homework quizzes appear approximately every two weeks. If you are unfamiliar with these, they will be explained in class. The other quizzes are standard, quizzes on the material; they can be announced, or there may be “pop” quizzes at a couple of key junctures in the year.

Tests are a very large weight on your grade. You should do your best the first time. However, you may retake a low test score during the semester. You have four retakes each semester. For every retake you do not use during a semester, you will receive 5 extra credit points.

Your participation grade is based on your attendance as well as your presentations throughout the semester. Every Tardy will cost you 3 points from your initial 100, and every unexcused absence will cost you 10 pts. Also, if you fail to present an assigned problem on your assigned date, you will lose 10 pts from this category.

Supplies:

To be successful in the course you will need the following supplies:

Communication is a very important part of this course. To that end, anything you can do to make your work neat and easy to read will help your grade. The graph paper, straight edge and colored pencils will help your graphs not only look better, but communicate your meaning much better than hastily drawn axis on notebook paper that are the same color as the graph of the function.
