Student Expectations
A. Students are expected to:
- Be in the locker room before the tardy bell rings.
- Be suited in appropriate P.E. gear 5 minutes after the tardy bell rings.
- Be seated at their assigned roll-taking area on time.
- Never leave a teaching station without teachers’ permission, even to get a drink.
B. Locks, lockers, and showers:
- You will be issued a P.E. lock. Do not bring your own!
- DO NOT SHARE locks, lockers, baskets, or combinations.
- We are not responsible for lost or stolen items. LOCK THEM UP!
- Use your lock and report it immediately if it is lost. (stray locks will be displayed in the P.E. office window)
- There is a $5.75 fee for lost locks. If the teacher has to remove your lock and/or clean locker at the end of the semester, there will be a $5.00 service fee.
- Report loss or theft of personal property immediately.
C. Physical Education Uniform:
- P.E. clothing will be taken home and cleaned at least once a week and more often if the unit requires it. We recommend taking the clothes home on Friday.
- All students will wear shoes appropriate to the unit and the facilities. All shoes will have shoestrings and they will be tied tight enough to give some support. For the protection of students, equipment, and the facility-shoes that leave black marks will not be accepted for gym use, nor will “street hikers.”
- The remainder of the attire will be the designated P.E. Department required uniform. This consists of school purchased shirt and navy athletic shorts (mid-thigh length or longer) and white socks.
- Navy blue cotton athletic cut sweatpants will be allowed. No stretch or spandex pants or shorts.
- No sagging shorts. (teacher’s discretion)
- No hats or bandannas in the gym or the weight room.
- Student must wear required P.E. attire for P.E. make-up.
D. Cooperate with all instructors and TA’s.
E. Do your best to improve daily in each unit.
F. Observe all safety and health rules in each class activity and avoid horseplay.
G. No dunking or hanging on the basketball rim at anytime. (Automatic discipline step)
H. No climbing the bleachers.
I. Be attentive and open to learning new skills.
J. Take proper care of all equipment and the facility.
K. Report all injuries and medical problems immediately.
L. Refrain from using obscene language or gestures. This will constitute as a discipline step.
M. Demonstrate proper respect for students and faculty.
N. Cooperate with shower room/lockerrooom procedures:
- Students are encouraged to shower, using their own towel. All towels and litter must be picked up, shower turned off, and the locker room in good condition for the next class. Students are to make sure that P.E. clothing is locked in their baskets. Students will use dress lockers only during class time. Do not leave a lock on the dress lockers after class or it will be removed.
- Students will remain behind restraining lines painted on the floor near the exits until the final bell rings. Failure to do so will constitute as a discipline step.
O. Medical excuses, for illness:
- Medical excuses in written form will be accepted from a parent for a period of five days. Anything involving more than a five-day period must be in written form from a physician. The student or parent must make arrangements for make up work for days missed due to medical reasons. This must be done within a period of five school days after the medical excuses. A note from a parent to excuse students must have the following information: Date, Parent Name, Student Name, Home/Work Phone numbers, Reason, Length of time. Students who miss up to six (6) weeks of class due to illness or injury may still receive full credit by completing makeup work. Those missing more than six (6) weeks will be advised to drop P.E. without credit for that semester for medical reasons.
P. Participation and nonparticipation in class activities:
- Physical Education is basically a laboratory-type class; therefore, participation is extremely important. Eighty (80) percent of your semester grade comes from your participation effort, while twenty (20) percent of your grade comes from written and/or skills tests. In Introduction to Fitness freshman classes and Body Shape, seventy (70%) percent of your semester grade comes from your participation effort, while thirty (30%) percent comes from written work (tests, daily work, projects).
- Minimum standards for earning credit:
- Earn Eighty (80) percent of the available participation points and an overall grade of 72%.
- Average a C- or better on all written and/or skills tests
3. Four points are available each day. Loss of points can happen in the following ways:
May be made up:
- -4 (x) excused absence
- -4 (n/s) excused non-suit -
- -4 (S) suspended from school/class
May NOT be made up:
- -4 (o) unexcused absence (discipline step)
- -4 (n/s) unexcused non-suit
- -1 not suited down properly/tardy to class
- -1-4 not participating properly in class
4. Unexcused non-suit policy (An unexcused non-suit is defined as the student not being dressed down and not having a dated note from their parent or guardian to excuse them.) Non-suits and behavior both fall under the same discipline report.
- 1st non-suit = student is warned
- 2nd non-suit = contact parent or guardian (Discipline Step 1)
- 3rd non-suit = 2nd warning
- 4th non-suit = 3 day suspension from class
- 5th non-suit = student is suspended from class for the remainder of the semester with a withdraw/failure grade.
5. A student who does not participate in their physical education class may not participate in his/her after school athletic practice/game.
Q. Students may appeal grades to Department Chair (Ms. Koss-Warner) at the end of the semester. Students have until the end of the following semester to appeal. Appeal procedures will be:
- Student will arrange and participate in a conference to include parent, student, teacher and department chair.
- Conferences will be held between 7:30 a.m. and 7:50 a.m. on the morning arranged.
- A determination will be made within a week as decided by an appeal board.
R. Recognize discipline procedures:
- 1. If any behavioral or attendance policies are broken the procedure will be:
- Step I Warning-bring problem to your attention & Parent notification
- Step II Three (3) day referral to study hall
- Step III WDF Withdrawal from class with a failing grade and placed in study hall for the rest of the semester
S. We will follow the school rules governing cheating and plagiarism.
T. Students must make up all work within two weeks after returning back to school.
All school-related absences are not figured in any total, but they must be made up. All excused absences, including school-related absences, must be made up in order to receive credit. If you believe you have extenuating circumstances regarding your ability to complete make-ups, please contact your teacher. Students will be required to attend one 30 minute make-up session for each excused absence or excused non-suit. P.E. make-up is available two times per week.
- Wednesday 8:00 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Mat Room -- Step Aerobics
- Thursday 2:45 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. Main Gym -- Weights/Conditioning
Students must wear their p.e. uniform and be on time to make-up sessions.
U. Once a student has 12-17 absences that have been made up and are not school-related, the highest grade earned is a Pass.
V. Once a student has missed more than 18 days that are not school-related, the grade earned will be a Withdraw (F) or an Incomplete (Medical Excuses).
W. Students who miss their semester final will receive an incomplete until the test or activities are made up. The makeup must be accomplished by the semester following the incomplete grade.
X. All 9th graders shall be enrolled in a one (1) credit one-year course of study in Health and Fitness. Ninth graders who fail the required Health class and/or the required Fitness for Life class, will adhere to the following:
If a 9th grader fails Health, that student must repeat the required 9th grade Health class.
If a 9th grader fails the Fitness for Life class, that student must repeat the required Fitness for Life class.
- Students who fail Health and/or Fitness for Life may repeat the class(es) as a 10th, 11th or 12th grader.
