3/11  Select which essay you will revise for your Julius Caesar final and begin making revisions. Revised draft due on Monday.

12/7   Discussion of themes in Lord of the Flies.  Homework: Thesis statement assignment:  Write a thesis statement at the top of the page. Next, write two topics sentences (one about your character and one about one of your symbols) explaining how Golding uses your character and symbol to support his theme. Under each topic sentence, select and type three quotes from your journal that support both the topic sentence and the thesis statement.  This should be work processed and it is due on Wednesday.  Read chapter 12 for Wednesday.

12/8  Lab for Golding research, new vocabulary words, and tomorrow's assignment. Be prepared to present your research in class tomorrow (oral presentation, no written document will be turned in).

As you watch, think about how the characters relate to the idea of the hero's journey, as well as whether the story fits the definitions of tragedy we discussed in class.  Homework: look over the essay prompts and write three thesis statements. (You wil eventually choose your best one.)

11/04  Brainstorming for essay prompts. Homework: DGP for the week will be graded and entered in the gradebook on Thursday. Bring rough draft of essay to class tomorrow.

9/22  DGP sentence parts. We will discuss how the inductive process works in writing. You will decide which of your quotes fit together to support your thesis statement. We will discuss how to look for patterns and then create topic sentences that prove the thesis.

9/23   We will discuss topic sentences and how to organize a multiparagraph essay.  Homework: write three topic sentences that support your thesis and that can be proved using the quotes you selected. Include an explanation of why the quotes and topic sentence are significant and how they prove the thesis.  This is due on Friday.  Be prepared to share in small groups how you would organize your essay.
