  • Final Project: Due June 4
  • You are to work in a small group - up to four people to create a movie trailer and poster promoting your movie
  • Here is what is due and when it should be done....
    • Movie Trailer to be done in Photoshop, should be a parady or replica of existing trailer, watch trailers today to get ideas.
    • Work within your groups to today to plan your movie trailer, think about costumes and props that will be needed. 
    • All filming needs to be completed this week. Shoot everything during class.
    • Any filming not done this week will have to be completed outside of class on your own time, using your own equipment.
    • Next week will be for completing the poster for the movie. One needs to be completed for the entire group.
  • If you do not wish to create a movie, please come up with a proposal that you would like to pursue for a final project. It should take around 10 hours to complete.
  • I will have a proposal form here on the website tomorrow.

Friday, May 17

  • Turn in your menus today. Please go to File/Export in InDesign. Choose Adobe PDF (Print)
  • Use "Last Names Menu" for the PDF file name and place it in the Menu Folder on the Server.
  • If you have time left over you can have free time (quiet, at your own computer, not moving around) or you can try this extra credit project.

Tuesday-Thursday, May 14-16

  • Work with a partner to create a one-page restaurant menu
  • Your menu must be done in InDesign and include the following:
    • Name and contact info for your restaurant (be creative and make it look awesome!)
    • At least 4 appetizers
    • At least 8 entrees
    • At least 4 desserts
    • Everything has to have a description and a price
  • You also must have:
    • Photos
    • Vector graphics
    • Great looking fonts
    • Text effects
    • Effective use of fonts
    • Colors and font scheme have to make sense
  • There is extra credit for the best in each class.

Monday, May 13

  • Create an appealing and/or funny and/or interesting summer vacation postcard. Use Photoshop. Requirements:
    • At least one cutout, more would probably be better
    • Interesting background
    • Any other elements that would make it visually appealing

Thursday, May 9

  • Your Teacher Appreciation Cards are due today. Both the assigned card and the extra credit card. 
  • There is a folder on the server for the Teacher Appreciation Cards. Please submit JPEGs only!!!!
    • If you did the card in InDesign please go to File/Export, and save as "LAST NAME FIRST NAME", please make sure to export as high quality and 300 or 600 DPI!!
    • If you did the card in Photoshop please go to File/Save as and save it as a JPEG "LAST NAME FIRST NAME"
    • If you did the card in Illustrator please go to File/Export, select JPEG and you must check the box that says Use Artboards, save it as a JPEG "LAST NAME FIRST NAME"
  • If you are submitting an extra credit card, please label it as "LAST NAME FIRST NAME EXTRA"

Wednesday, May 8

  • Make sure you get your yearbook pages turned in to me today...we need a few more for the book. First come, first served.
  • Teacher Appreciate Week assignment
    • Using any program of your choice, create a 6" X 4" (300 resolution in Photoshop) appreciation card for a teacher/administrator/coach/custodian/assistant here at OHS
    • The card must include the following:
      • A picture of you, with the background cut out. You should be smiling and looking otherwise appreciative. This photo should be nice and big.
      • Headline text the says in big words "Thank you" or something like that
      • A paragraph explaining why you appreciate them. This should be 5-6 sentences. Please use a legible font, around size 10
      • Vector art or a custom gradiant background
      • At least 1 other piece of art (vector, jpeg, whatever) that would be meaningful to your teacher/coach/etc. For example a picture of the book To Kill a Mockingbird for your english teacher. Or something funny that your teacher would appreciate and find funny
    • If you are interested in extra credit you can also make a second card unique card for another teacher/staff member.
    • These are due at the end of class Thursday, May 9 - TOMORROW

Tuesday, May 7

  • Yearbook pages are due today (25 points in the gradebook)
  • Please go through this checklist before counting yourself as done
  • Please submit a JPEG version of the InDesign document (File/Export - JPEG) and please make sure to use 600 as the resolution!
  • Place the final JPEG page in the folder on the server.
  • Use this as the file name "LASTNAME FIRSTNAME YEARBOOK"

Monday, May 6

  • Pictures should be done, placed in modular designs. All photos have a caption of at least two sentences.
  • Add the body copy today. Use the same font family as the captions. It should be slightly larger than the caption text, probably size 10.
  • The body should summarize your year using an interesting lead, quotes (at least 2 from friends and family), and the body copy should capture the fun and emotion of your year. It is not just a list of the stuff you did. What makes the stuff you did so memorable? Capture that!

Friday, May 3

  • Continue placing photos and making captions. Use a modular design. Use groups of photos.
  • Save some room for the body copy. This is writing (around 10 sentences) that is going to tell the story of your year. We will work on this on Monday. Photos and captions are the priority today.

Thursday, May 2

  • You can start placing photos on the page. Please make sure that they are photos of you! For each photo you will need to write a caption in size 8 font (or smaller if necessary)
  • Captions should answer who, what, where, why, when, and how.
  • The first sentence is in present tense. Any following sentences are in past tense.
  • Please write everything from your first-person perspective.
  • The final copy of this is due Tuesday at the end of your class period. We can only have a 100 page book...I have 123 students...those who are late will not get published. Getting published is a part of the gradebook.

Wednesday, May 1

  • Open your yearbook page and work on your interesting, clever, and visually appealing title
  • Do you want a background for your page? Find a cool EPS or AI file to place on the page - JPEGs have to have at least 3000 pixels to use
  • Make your title stand out!
  • Gather photos, you need at least 7 high quality photos of you during the school year.

Tuesday, April 30

  • Some of you need to re-export your 12 X 12s using full resolution for printing purposes
  • Design your own yearbook page assignment
  • I want to take all the pages and put together a classroom yearbook made up of your individual pages
  • Today is theme, font, and color development
    • Theme can be whatever you think it is fun, interesting, or important in your life
    • Choose two or a maximum three fonts that you are going to use on this yearbook page
    • Choose two or a maximum three colors that are going to be prevalent throughout your page
    • Try to font CMYK codes or mix your own colors to create swatches that you can use on your page
  • Apply your new font and color treatment to create a clever and cool looking title to your page. Keep your theme in mind. The title should be a related to it and yourself
  • Tomorrow we will start applying pictures. Please have some available!

  • Put finishing touches on Biography
  • Final document should have divider (pen tool or illustrator file)
  • No floating torsos, heads
  • Make sure text is legible (not TNR, ariel...download a cool, modern font.)
  • Quote isn't necessary, but would be cool
  • Apply effects to your cutout, divider, etc....make it look awesome!
  • Save and then EXPORT as a JPEG to the folder called 12 X 12

  • Import, edit photo in photoshop with adjustment layers

    • Make a great looking title - done in InDesign
    • Place a picture of yourself - edit in photoshop

  • Submit photo/graphics items in JPEG format, movies in .mov (quicktime) format using a file name structure that will easily identify who is the work's creator

  • Learn how to apply vignettes to your photos
  • Apply this to your photos in your final folder
  • Final Folder should consist of 5-10 outstanding photos, all photos should have:
    • Be cropped to 5 x 7
    • Have adjustments such as Brightness and Contrast, Levels, Curves, Photo filter, etc
    • Have your groups custom stamp on each picture
    • Vignette applied

Wednesday, April 10

  • Work with your partner to go through all the different layer adjustments, play around with them and come up with some fun and interesting effects
  • Create a brush in a new photoshop document. The brush should be your partnership name
  • Apply this new brush to all your best photos

  • Review uploading and file naming...
  • Each group go out and shoot for 25 minutes again, go to another place on campus
  • Set an alarm and get back
  • Review cropping, brightness and contrast
  • Start to apply effects to photos
  • Go to Bridge and create a "Final Signs of Spring" folder, start moving edited files to that folder

    • Somewhere in the video there should be at least 1 psd photo/graphic or vector
    • Somewhere in the video there should be at least 1 text layer
    • There should be a song playing in the background
    • There should be a sound effect at least once
    • The music should be turned down or "ducked" when people are speaking
    • 5 second closing credits 
  • Export filename should be your group members names "Mike, Tim, Shelly, Becky..."
  • Save to the Marlin Server under your class period, "Funny Video" folder

  • Watch practice uploading and beginning editing during class today.

Monday, March 18

  • Use Photoshop to create a movie
  • Work in small groups to plan your comedy video
  • Your group needs to create a detailed storyboard about people telling a funny, corny, or just plain dumb joke - OR A SERIES OF JOKES...
  • So this is what you need to do today:
    • Research jokes in your small groups. You may have up to 6 people in your group.
    • All jokes must be 100% CLEAN. If you have to ask Zarate if it is OK, then it is not.
    • Storyboard your jokes. You must use the following shots:
      • Establishing shot
      • Over the shoulder shot
      • Extreme close up
      • All other shots are up to you
    • There has to be music in the video
    • There must be sound effects
    • You must use tripods
    • Create a 1920 by 1080 title screen in Photoshop for your movie. Include a group name, pen tool cutouts, any cool effects, layer styles, etc
  • DON'T SHARE YOUR JOKE WITH ANYONE!

    • Make you logo a prominent part of your poster
    • Also include cutouts - they must be done using the pen tool
    • Don't forget layer styles...effects in Illustrator, InDesign
    • If you are using the Adobe Family icons, be sure to use CS6 icons

  • VisCom Promotional Campaign
  • You and your team (up to four students) need to create a promotional campaign for VisCom.
  • The purpose of your campaign is to create buzz for the student body of Olympia High School for students to take VisCom next school year
  • Using a color scheme of your choice, you are going to use Photoshop and/or Illustrator to create the following:
    • A logo for VisCom (should do in Illustrator)
    • A 13 x 19 poster for VisCom
      • We do Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Photography, Video Productions, Graphics, Design and Layout, etc
      • You should use the logo you created within this document. Remember, we are trying to recruit students to the class so it your job as the marketing team to make the class appear to be fun, interesting, and worth taking! (Even if you don't think so, haha!)

  • Work on posters the entire period. Your group should be using your one best logo for all the posters. Each person should be doing a poster. 
  • Things to keep in mind:
    • Posters are 13" by 19" and can be done in either Photoshop, Illustrator, or Indesign
    • Quality is of the utmost importance. These posters should be perfect in every aspect.
    • These posters will and should be the best work that you have done the entire semester. 
    • You are going to take photos for the poster after the break, so plan accordingly. 
    • Please see the instructions on Wednesday for more info.

    • Tabloid size, landscape orientation
    • Your name in an interesting font and some kind of dividing line
    • Here is a sample

  • Begin your posters. You can use InDesign, Photoshop, or Illustrator, that is up to you. Posters must include:
    • The final logo that you choose for your group, nice and big
    • at least 5 professional looking cutouts from Photoshop
    • Photographs of all the members of your group, either individually or as a group
    • If you are doing a musical group the poster is promoting an upcoming concert - you determine the time/date/location
    • If you are doing an infomercial the poster is promoting the product
    • If you are doing work for another organization then the poster is somehow promoting the group or their event, whichever applies.

  • You have this class period to create an awesome turkey illustration
  • You can use all the tools that you have learned so far for drawing: shapes (using pathfinder if you want), pencil, or pen tool.
  • Use fills and strokes to complete the turkey and give it good color. Maybe provide a background too?
  • The top 5 in each class get extra credit and get their artwork shown on the TV in hallway!
  • It is due at the end of the class period...no questions! Turn into the Marlin server in the folder marked Turkey Throwdown.

  • Submit your final jpeg version to the marlin server
  • Assignment should be named "First Last Halloween"

  • Liquify yourself some fangs if your teeth are showing
  • Change the color of your eyes
  • Use the Burn tool to make your eye sockets darker and add the appearance of bruising
  • Find a cool texture (stone wall, cracked mud, interesting pattern) and use a layer mask and blending modes to give the appearance of texture on your skin

  • Start our zombie photoshop
  • Find an interesting background for your zombie (should have at least 1000 pixels), open in photoshop
  • Download a cool font from dafont.com, type your name on your document and give it layer style work
  • Take pictures of you as a zombie, upload using bridge

  • Finish your Photoshop Final Document that we started on Friday. It must have the following:
    • A perfect cutout of you
    • All the tutorials that you created (do not include 1000 words!)
    • A short paragraph listing why your project(s) are awesome, why you are awesome at photoshop, and what you learned in doing this tutorial
    • Brush your name on it
    • You could also put a background on it if you wish
    • Please save a JPEG copy and place it in the Zarate Classroom Folder on the Marlin network

    • A nice cutout of you standing next to/introducing your work

  • Use the Rectangular and Elliptical Marquee tools, Use the Polyginal and Magnetic Lasso tools, and use the Quick Selection
  • Using each tool, cut out two shapes perfectly and place onto a new document. Find photos on the internet to use for cutouts.
  • Label each cutout with a text frame

  • Get a feel for what they can do when you customize them by changing settings
  • Come up with a final edited photo for entry into our First Annual Photoshop Filter Contest (PHO-FIL-CON 2012!)
  • You are to work alone!
  • You can use the type tool and brushes as we learned those last week.
  • Winner will get a sweet treat this week!

    • Working in a group of three or partnership, walk around campus and take pictures of the Signs of Fall

    • Your final output is going to be a ten photo slideshow, with music.
    • All photos will have a custom stamp on them (group name) and will be edited to look awesome!

  • Review tripods, cameras, batteries, memory cards, recording, watching video, formatting cards
  • Work with same small group as yesterday to create a movie using the following camera angles and techniques
  • Each shot should last anywhere from 3-5 seconds and we will put them all together to make a very short movie
  • This movie is going to be very similar to what you saw in class yesterday, just a lot shorter
  • Here are the shots that your group needs to get:

  • Rules for leaving class:
    • No interrupting classes (do not point camera in windows, do not take pictures, etc)
    • No talking to students in the hallways
    • No leaving the campus
    • No climbing trees, jumping fences, or doing anything else that will endanger self/others
    • Pay attention to the time and be back at the correct time. Set alarm on phone (1st - 8:20, 3rd - 10:25, 4th - 11:25, 5th - 12:58)
