The advanced course introduces the use of filters and advanced darkroom techniques addition to producing special effects such as double exposures. The will also be working in various media techniques outside the darkroom including: Polaroid transfers, sepia toning and Adobe Photoshop.

PREREQUISITES:

None for Beginning Photography. You are required to pass Beginning Photography with a “B” in order to continue onto Advance Photography.

SUPPLIES:

A 35 mm camera REQUIRED (it can be an automatic or manual focus), 12” ruler, scissors, exacto knife, glue sticks, eraser ( gray kneaded erasers are great and they last for years), a set of at least three art brushes in various sizes (acrylic brushes are best, since they may be used in water). Various other supplies may be needed as we progress through the semester.

GRADES:

Students will not be compared to one another on talent. Grades will be based on daily classroom participation, overall time on task and how well the objectives have been achieved for each assignment. A student may always strive for a higher grade on each project after the first evaluation, as long as that assignment has been turned in on time. The time length for a project redo will be set by you and the instructor. My objective is to foster creativity and learning through success and practice.

DUE DATES:

Assignments are due when indicated. With the exception of excused absences, late assignments will be accepted for 1/2 credit. The student (that’s you) is responsible for knowing what the next assignment is before leaving the class. You may redo any assignment within a contracted time period (set by you and the instructor) for a higher grade, as long as that assignment has been turned in on time. It is a good idea to partner up with someone reliable in the class, so you can get upcoming assignments if you are absent. YOUR WORK MUST BE YOUR OWN (THAT MEANS NEGATIVES YOU HAVE PERSONALLY TAKEN, PRINTS THAT YOU HAVE PERSONAL MADE FROM YOUR NEGATIVES AND CONTACT SHEETS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE FROM NEGATIVES THAT YOU HAVE PERSONALLY TAKEN).

HOMEWORK:

You will need to spend time outside of class taking photos, so plan accordingly.

A PROJECT IS COMPLETE WHEN YOU TURN IN THE FOLLOWING: One contact sheets, One contact test strip, All your negatives in plastic cover, your photograph ( you choose the size you wish to print), your photo test strip and your photograph record sheet (the paper you fill out on every photo you take). ALL THESE ITEMS MUST BE TURNED IN TO RECEIVE FULL CREDIT. Here is the breakdown of your grade for each project; 55 points for the photograph, 10 points for test strip, 10 points for contact sheets, 10 points for negatives, 15 points for record sheet.

Final exams consist of teacher/student critique and every student is expected to be in class.
