Beginning & Advanced Ceramics
Grading and Course Requirements

Introductory Ceramics: This course prepares students to creatively and technically, express emotions, ideas, or inner visions by sculpting works from clay. The students will be introduced to basic techniques in creative hand building and principles of glazing and ceramic decoration. In addition students will explore commercial art business skills and career opportunities in the field of visual art.
Advanced Ceramics: Students will continue to prefect the skills learned in Introductory Ceramic with the opportunity for in-depth exploration in technical and design skills, plus addition of advance ceramic techniques such as hand throwing on the potters' wheel and advance glazing processes.
Introductory Ceramics: None
Advanced Ceramics: requires a passing grade in Beginning Ceramics.
Ceramic sponge, a small water container, various ceramic tools that can be purchased from Michael’s or other art stores, and a set of art paintbrushes. Please make sure to mark all tools clearly with your name.
ALL WORK DONE ON YOUR CERAMIC PIECE MUST BE YOUR OWN, THAT MEANS YOU (only you) MUST FORM YOUR GREEN CLAY INTO THE ASSIGNED PROJECT AND YOU (only you) MUST PAINT YOUR BISQUE CLAY PROJECT, OTHERWISE IT IS CALLED CHEATING AND THE DISCIPLINE POLICY IN THE SCHOOL HANDBOOK WITH BE FOLLOWED.
Grades will be based on daily classroom participation, overall time on task and how well the objectives have been achieved for each assignment.
A portion of each projects grade is based on the construction of the piece. The joint seams must be invisible and spaces smooth. The piece must hang together when picked up and stay together when dry. Walls and the main body of the piece must follow the dimensions and parameters of the assignment. Creativity enhances the grade and ideas can be gained from a number of sources available in the class.
A student may always strive for a higher grade on each project after the first evaluation is given as long as that assignment has been turned in on time. That often requires a remaking of the project. The original project rubric and a photo of the original project must be turned in with the redo. The extended time for turning in a project redo will be set by the instructor (that’s me). My objective is to foster creativity and learning through success and practice.
The student (that’s you) is responsible for knowing what the next assignment is before leaving the class. You may redo any assignment that has been turned in on time within a contracted time period (set by the instructor, that’s me again) for a higher grade. It is a good idea to partner up with someone reliable in the class, so you can get upcoming assignments if you are absent. YOUR WORK MUST BE YOUR OWN.
The projects are broken down to the three grading period. For Ceramics three projects are due at the end of each grading period. If the student is working on a project that is somewhere in the process, I will give the project a grade of a “0” and if it is completely finished by the end of the next six-week grading period it will then receive a grade. If you don’t have it done by the next six week grading period it will receive an “F”.
1st and 2nd semester end due dates are assigned by the instructor and all students must turn in all their finished projects in by the time the bell rings at the end of their class final assigned date.
2nd semester: all seniors must have all of their finished projects in by the time the bell rings at the end of their class final assigned date. PLEASE NOTE, the final due date for seniors 2nd semester may differ from the other students final assigned due date.
Ceramics is a LAB class, which means you must be present in class to complete the projects.
ALL projects must be clearly labeled with student’s first and last name and period number in order to receive credit. That means it has to be clearly marked in the wet clay before it goes onto the drying rack and it must be fired in the kiln. So, don’t paint over it with glaze.
Final exams consist of teacher/student critique and every student is expected to be in class.
(a) Be in your seat, ready for instruction when the bell starts to ring. This is very important as instructions are given in the first 10 to 15 minutes of class.
(b) Come to class period to work and stay on task.
(c) Show respect for yourself, other students and teachers, as well as, the property of others and school property. No horseplay, running, pushing, shoving, throwing things, no off colored language, put downs, making fun of others. Due to the equipment and materials in this classroom and for the safety of all students and staff, there is a zero tolerance policy regarding these behaviors. THIS MEANS YOU WILL GET ONE WARNING AND THEN YOU WILL BE SENT TO ISD AND PUT ON THE DISCIPLINE STEP SYSTEM.
(d) IMAGES THAT ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE INCLUDE; WEAPONS, SEXUALLY EXPLICIT IMAGES OR SCULPTURES, GANG RELATED IMAGES, DRUG RELATED IMAGES (INCLUDING MUSHROOMS). ANY STUDENT MAKING A “BONG”, PIPE OR ANYTHING RELATED TO DRUG USE WILL RECEIVE AN “F” FOR THE PROJECT, PARENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED AND DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS WILL BE TAKEN IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SCHOOL POLICIES ON DRUG RELATED ISSUES.
(e) Please turn off you cell phones before class begins, I will be giving instruction the first 10 to 15 minutes of class and I need you to listen to instructions. You may listen to music when you are working, as long as you remove your headphones when I am giving directions or information to the class.
(f) Images of staff and/or students taken or produced must have written permission of the person(s) before they can be used commercially or publicly.
(g) WARNING, DO NOT LEAVE CLASS WITHOUT A PASS!!!!!!! YOU'LL BE EATEN BY GRIMLINS OR SOMETHING EQUALLY NASTY.
ATTENDANCE, DISCIPLINE AND CHEATING POLICIES WILL BE FOLLOWED AS OUTLINED IN THE STUDENT HANDBOOK. HAVING SOMEONE OTHER THAN YOURSELF WORKING ON YOUR PROJECT IS CONSIDERED CHEATING AND WILL RESULT IN STUDY HALL OR REMOVAL FROM THE CLASS.
