8TH GRADE TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL


We want to welcome future OHS students and their families to Olympia High School! Just as you experienced both excitement and nervousness about the first day of kindergarten or the first day of middle school, you will find this transition evokes similar feelings. We hope the information provided on these pages will help ease that transition. Incoming 9th graders will enroll at Olympia High School in different ways, and we have a process for each, which will be clarified on these pages. We look forward to meeting you in the fall, getting to know you and supporting and guiding you through your high school career - it’s an exciting time with many opportunities!!

March 26 Parent night 6:00-7:30 PAC

(Parents only - Parents will learn information about class offerings)

April 2 Activity Fair 6:00- 7:30 - Gym/Commons

(Parents and Students- Students will have an opportunity to sign up for clubs, co-curricular clubs, sports, etc. OHS student leaders and advisors will be on hand to talk with students.)


Current Reeves, Washington or Marshall Middle School 8th graders:
OHS counselors will meet with students from Reeves and Washington, as well as those Marshall Middle School students who have been identified as living in the OHS attendance area. Students will be given 9th grade course catalogs and the following forms (stapled together),which must be returned to their block teacher no later than March 24, 2009. The documents include:

MATH PLACEMENT: All 8th graders will take the OSD MAP test at their current middle school. Students will be given the result of the test and their teacher's recommendation for the corresponding math placement level recommended for 9th grade.

HONORS BIOLOGY: Some students may want to waive Physical Science and take Honors Biology. In order to do so, students must take the Honors Biology Placement Test, which assesses mastery of Physical Science. Students must apply to take the test. The application is available online (link below this paragraph) or at the middle school's main office. APPLICATION to take the test must be received at Olympia High School- Date TBA

Current Private, Independent School or Home School 8th graders:

If you are an 8th grader currently enrolled at a private or independent school, or have been home schooled and live in the Olympia High School attendance area, the link below describes the enrollment process you will follow. (A copy of this letter was sent to area private schools on February 8th for distribution to 8th graders.)


Letter to Private/Independent School 8th grade students
outlines the process and timelines for setting up the enrollment interview, how to obtain enrollment paperwork, and academic placement test dates. All students enrolling at OHS will take a math placement exam to determine the correct level for math enrollment. Tests will also be given for students who are interested in placement in Honors English, Honors Biology, and 2nd and 3rd year of a Foreign Language. Following completion of the new student interview, students will be given the following forms to complete and return by March 28,2008. (Please note: you are not able to download these documents)

Out of district student enrollment

Only students who live in the Olympia High School attendance area will be allowed to enroll for the upcoming school year. This applies to students who may be currently enrolled at a feeder middle school (Reeves or Washington) and live out of the OHS attendance area. On May 1st, beginning at 7:00 a.m., non resident families may call 596-7048 or come in person to have their name added to the waitlist for enrollment in the fall after the first week of school. If there is space available after the first week of school, families will be contacted. Families whose children are waitlisted are advised to register their child at the high school of residence for the 2009-2010 school year.
