Summer School Information 2007
New Market Information
2007-04-02: April 9th- brochures for summer school get mailed from New Market Thursday, May 3rd- Summer School registration occurs from 6-8 at New Market Summer school is divided into 2 sessions- each session costs $50 Session 1: June 25 to July 11th Session 2: July 12th to July 27th Both sessions are from 7:30 to 3:00 each day, students receive .50 credits for the successful completion of each course. Students interested in summer Cosmetology MUST be seniors to be, go to a June orientation, pay a $100 fee and meet other criteria. For further questions, students should see their respective counselors.
New Market is a consortium of 10 school districts and is an extension
of the home high school, functioning as an off-campus training
site. The school is recognized state-wide for its unique and
specialized programs. The programs simulate business and industry
and have numerous connections with business partners in the area.
New Market students develop basic and advanced work skills. They
also develop maturity skills, and entry-level occupation competencies
at no cost to the student.
Students who receive training at New Market can expect to:
- Earn up to 3 high school credits in a full-year program.
- Learn from teachers/partners who come from business and industry.
- Receive information on career and post-secondary opportunities.
- Participate in Internships and Work Based Learning, Job Shadowing, Apprenticeships and Clinic Settings when applicable.
- Develop a personal career portfolio.
- Participate in a wide range of leadership activities/programs.
- Receive a Certificate of Competency.
- Make the transition from school to work and/or post-secondary education.
- Receive advanced placement or college credit through the Tech Prep programs.
Olympia High School students are eligible for New Market
Vocational Skills Center their junior year and senior years. The student can earn up to 3
high school credits in a full-year program. These credits become
elective or occupational education credit when they transfer back into
the Olympia High
School. There are a limted number of cross credit opportunities at New
Market with Olympia High School. Students should make an appointment with the School Counselor to
discuss this. Students take their core academic classes to
fulfill
their graduation requirements at Olympia High School for their high school diploma. Students
can continue to earn an Olympia High School diploma and also possiby
pick up an industry certification
from New Market when they have finished their senior year.
Culminating Project Options: Most New Market Vocational Skills programs offer the Culminating Project in their coursework. Students planning to complete the project at New Market Vocational Skills Center will need to meet with either the Culminating Project Coordinator or OHS counselor to set up eligibility and a plan for graduation. Students will complete this requirement in project-only classes, classes with opportunity for projects, and independent study or at New Market Vocational Skills Center Project Class.
