

GIRLS SWIMMING
Head Coach Mel Smith
Mel comes to Olympia after retiring from the State of Illinois in 2002. Mel and his wife Amy moved to Olympia in 2005. Mel swam in high school and college in Michigan. His coaching experience includes age group, high school and Masters for more than 20 years. In addition to coaching Olympia, Mel is the Masters coach for the Briggs YMCA. He continues to compete himself in both pool and open water events. Most recently he placed 7th in the Master’s National Meet in Federal Way.
Asst. Coach Ron Byrnes
Ron is an Associate Professor in the School of Education and Movement Studies at Pacific Lutheran University. Ron played golf and water polo in high school in Southern California and attended UCLA. Currently, he enjoys swimming, cycling, and running, and competing in a few triathlons each summer. Recent activities have included Masters swim meets, the 2004 Boston Marathon, and the 2006 and 2007 Rides Around Mount Rainier in One Day.
Asst. Coach Rachel Schaub
Rachel is a native of Pennsylvania having grown up in Pittsburg. Her competive swimming experience there covered age group and high school competition over 11 years. She is a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in graphic design. A recent NW arrival with her husband she currently is employed as a designer for Daniels-Brown Communications in Tumwater. She has returned to competitive swimming as a member of the Briggs YMCA Masters.
