Olympia School District -- High School -- Athletic Code
Questions and Amnswers
What grades do I need to maintain eligibility?
- Students need to have passed all subjects in the previous semester or trimester. If they fail one or more classes, the student is placed on probation for a period of five weeks beginning the firs day of practice. While on probation, students may practice but may not play in games, travel with the team, sit on the bench or act as managers.
- If a student failed two or more classes in the previous semester or trimester the probationary period for fall sports begins on the the firs day of school (WIAA regulation) and continues for five weeks.
- Grade checks will be done every six weeks. At the first grade check, if a student is failing or at risk of failing any class, the athletic director will speak with the subject area teacher to determine the reason for the failing grade followed by a meeting with the student to remind them of the consequences of failing a class and the available resources to help them pass.
- If at the end of a semester/trimester a student receives a failing grade in one or more classes, they will immediately be placed on probation for a five week period. If failing one subject, the probationary period may be reduced if the student is passing all subjects prior to the end of the five week period. This probationary period may occur during the season.
- If a student has an IEP the athletic director, in consultation with the student's counselor, teacher and principal may grant an exception to the probationary period.
What happens if I violate school rules?
- Student athletes must obey all school and district rules stated in both the Students Rights and Responsibilities Handbook and the Athletic Code. If rules are violated disciplinary action, including possible suspension from the team will be imposed.
- All violations during the time of high school eligibility are considered when determining appropriate disciplinary action.
What happens if I use tobacco products?
- The first violation will result in a 10-day suspension from the team. If the student enrolls in a tobacco education class and continues participation in the class, the suspension may be reduced. After the suspension period, the student must meet with the eligibility committee and request reinstatement for participation.
- The second violation results in suspension for one calendar year. Enrolling in a tobacco education or cessation class will not reduce this suspension.
- The third violation results in suspension from all participation for the rest of high school eligibility. Enrollment in a tobacco education or cessation class will not reduce this suspension.
- All violations during the time of high school eligibility are considered cumulative- they do not start over each year.
What happens if I use alcohol or drugs?
- If students are found in possession, under the influence or participating in the sale/transfer of alcohol or other drugs on school grounds, or at school events, the appropriate discipline action as stated in the Student Handbook and Student Rights and Responsibility Handbook will be taken. In addition, student athletes will be disciplined in accordance with WIAA rules and regulations and those adopted by the Olympia School District as written in the Athletic Code.
- For the first violation of the rules, students are suspended form the team for the rest of the season. The student may apply for reinstatement during the current season or future seasons based, i part, on the completion of a formal/approved alcohol/other drug assessment and completion of any recommendations made as a result of the assessment.
- For a student's second violation of the rules, they are suspended form athletic participation for a calendar year. A student may apply for reinstatement after one calendar year.
- For a third violation, students are suspended from athletic participation for the remainder of high school eligibility. Students may not apply for reinstatement.
- Violations of the alcohol and other drugs rules are cumulative from 7th grade through 12th grade (violations occurring during middle school transfer to high school).
What happens if I am at a party where alcohol or other drugs are used-- or I use them?
- Students should immediately leave a party where alcohol and other drugs are illegally used. If they stay at the party, a 15-day suspension form the team will be imposed.
- If they uses alcohol or other drugs, the appropriate level of discipline listed previously will be imposed.
